Poverty Increasing in Dis-United Kingdom

The heatwave continues unabated in this little corner of the Dis-United Kingdom, and if we don't get rain soon the water butts on our allotment will run dry in the next few days.
This prospect is more than offset by the sight of our plants growing ever larger, and the fruits of our labours are already coming in. Last night we enjoyed a bowl of strawberries that surpassed anything you could buy.
Meanwhile, outside our little allotment world, things continue to get worse.
The latest news is that the wealth gap is growing ever wider, and poverty is now worse in New Labour's Britain than when they took power in 1997.
This is according to their own statistics.
Nosher was, as usual, keen to capitalise on the situation.
'If they hadn't put so much money into education and the health service (which appears to have been largely ineffective) and put it instead into raising pensions to a reasonable level, we wouldn't be in this situation now' he said, relaxing in his old deckchair in the shade of his allotment shed.
All around us the midday sun infused the plants with a vigour that allowed them to grow perceptibly as we watched.
'But you can't blame it all on the Government' I protested 'some things are outside their control, such as world oil prices.'
'Granted' said Nosher 'but when things were going their way they were very keen to take the credit, and, let's face it, an economic downturn was inevitable sooner or later - one that they didn't plan for, which is why the poor are being hit so hard now. These people claim they know what they're doing - when they obviously don't.'
'The irony' I said 'is that pensioner poverty fell faster under John Major's government than it did in the initial years of New Labour, when the latter had the healthy economic legacy of the Major years to buttress them.'
'Yep!' agreed Nosher, rather too enthusiastically 'they cocked it up, big time, and now a lot of chickens are coming home to roost. Things can only get worse, you mark my words!'
